You know, I had a lot of respect for Pete as a rider…the guy is amazing, but his comments about people doing old tricks in shows is just whack. If anything, it’s discouraging to new riders into flat that he would think that they are shit because they do tricks that are 20 years old. Who the hell is he to say what tricks a person should or shouldn’t do? I recently just started riding flat again after 18 years away from it…and I can tell you that I have so much fun doing infinity rolls and other tricks he says are shit. If you are thinking about riding flat, don’t listen to the guy…just do what you do and remember to have fun.

  • Pete Brandt Says:

Let’s set the record straight. Do I think that people doing infinity rolls and old tricks are Wack? No. I do think that it’s wack for someone doing tricks from twenty years ago and has been doing those same tricks for twenty years and expects to get paid for it . At the end of the day it’s all about having fun. Flatland owes you nothing, respect the art.

  • mutt Says:

    yo,

you need to shut the fook up
    ok
    1) pete meant all the old riders who do shows and
do the same thing over and over again in those shows
and does not show the progresssion that has happened
for the last 20 years and people in the audience get
the idea that flatland is retarded and is a bunch of faggots
    doing tricks.

i dont know who the fook you are but you need to know
that he is right and there are too many leeches and people
who suck off the flatland new bloodline in showing tricks that are so old..people think it is current shioot being done
    and that IS PLAIN WRONG!!

    2) you could never ever get to the level of PETE or to the level
of respect for what he has done and you have no idea his ideas and love for flatland and that you can never reach that kind
    of level.

i am PROUD TO SPONSOR PETE, and yes he is on TEAM MUTT
and has been for a long time and yes i still send him parts
which i never make a big thing out of as that is how i am
    and how PETE B. IS.

HEYA I AM SURE PETE, SEAN, AND I BELIEVE TO START RIDING YOU HAVE
TO START AT THE BASICS AND HE WOULD NEVER SAY FOR BEGINNERS
NOT TO DO THAT..WHAT WAS TALKED ABOUT WAS THE FACT THAT THESE
OLD RIDERS ARE DOING THE SAME TRICKS FROM THE80S AND EARLY
90S DOING SHOWS, MAKING MONEY AND FOOLING THE PUBLIC AT LARGE
THAT THESE ARE CURRENT TRICKS BEING DONE..THIS IS ONLY BRINGS
FLATLAND DOWN TO A STUPID, RETARDED LEVEL IN THE EYES OF THE
    PEOPLE WATCHING THIS SHIOOT!

ALL I AM SAYING IS KEEP IT REAL
    AND NO SUCKERS

    SUCKERFREE!

  • leva Says:

Flat suck no matter what way you look at it!

  • tod.borndead Says:

Okay…i’m catching you. It was my bad for misunderstanding what it is you said. You are right, you never said that those people are whack…just those who do shows and do them. I still disagree. I like to think of flat as FREEstyle…meaning exactly that…do whatever tricks you want. If people are doing old tricks and getting paid…hey, who am I to say that is right or wrong? I can’t “hate” on that. I don’t pretend to represent anyone except myself. You’re right…flat owes me nothing…just like I don’t owe anything to the “art”. In the end…it’s all adults riding kids bikes. I don’t take it seriously.

  • tod.borndead Says:

    Hey Mutt,

I just wanted to say thanks for being Pete’s mouth piece. I guess I was fooled when I noticed him using his own mouth to talk during the video. I think Pete can speak for himself…and he did so, and I appreciated it.
I would like to add that I have fun riding flat…so yes, I would say i’m on Pete’s level. Could I ever do the tricks he does. No way…the guy is a ninja on a bike!!! I consider him one of the most talented riders ever. I just watched Persevere the other day. The video and riding are top notch, and honestly…it’s part of why I started riding flat again after 18 years away(i’ve been riding street, dirt…whatever.)
I guess I can’t see your point about flat looking retarded to people watching these shows because I couldn’t care less what other people think. In my 23 years of riding I have never once entered a contest…and I have only done ONE show. I didn’t get paid for it…and I didn’t care to. That’s not to say that I was never “good” enough to place well…I just left the competition for the jocks.
Your comment about “leeches” just makes me laugh. Why are you so butt hurt? Are these “leeches” taking food out of your mouth?
I really shouldn’t have replied to you…you did a good job by yourself of making yourself sound ignorant. But what do I know…i’m just one of those “faggots doing tricks” you speak of.

  • tod.borndead Says:

Okay…let me give you a critical analysis(a history lesson) of Pete’s riding in his video Persevere. First, i’m going to say that the riding is top notch and Pete has bike control rarely seen the likes of ever. Second, i’m going to say that a good majority of the tricks that are done in the video are 20 years old. Let’s take one of Pete’s favorites…a Hitchhiker. Both he and I know that the trick was invented by Kevin Jones 20 years ago, in 1988. Another trick often seen in the video…a peddling Death Truck, was first done by Woody Itson(on a “fixie”) for the movie Quicksilver. Correct me if i’m wrong…but that was more than 20 years ago. Even the Crackpacker was taken from another trick that was done 20 years ago…the Backpacker was first done by Kevin Jones. So, as you can see…a good portion of modern flat riding is not modern at all. Some of these pro level tricks were invented twenty years ago.

Pete, I know i’m being a douche bag. I think you are certifiable bad ass on a bike, and I know the whole point of you saying what you did is that you have so much love for flat, that you want it represented in the best possible manner. I can respect that. The fact is…if I spent more time riding flat instead of shooting my mouth off on the internet…I might be a fraction as good as you.

  • Pete Brandt Says:

I want to say first thanks for your compliments as well as your opinion. As you stated in an earlier post, flatland is not that “serious” to you. Well, it’s everything to me and about a hundred of other riders across the world. History lesson one; yes the crackpacker was done 18 years ago. I know I invented it, and yes I did it in the video Persevere. But did you notice that it was backwards, forwards, and in circles, and in between a link full of tricks???!!! I guess you don’t see the difference as to why you might confused with a No handed one footed pumping blender as to a dude doing a pedaling death truck on a fixie in Quicksilver!! As far as “old men on little kids bikes” I guess you can explain that to the 7 year old kid down the street that started pulled his first hitchhiker today after riding for only 3 weeks! If I am guilty of one thing it is I do want people to believe that anything can be accomplished in flatland as long as you put your heart and mind into it. Don’t sell yourself short, peace.

  • WARREN Says:

I m very disappointed by his comments- I´ve been riding for over 25yrs-and I still love it! I still do the old tricks and I´m proud of it.I´ve been doing shows and kids still love a cool bar ride or a triple decade. He seems to forget that these tricks have influenced him over the years. Think again Pete, flatland is an original sport.By the way a barspinning backwards infinity roll still looks much better than a boring 5 minute frontwheel combo, period.

  • Pete Brandt Says:

I am very disappointed in you, Warren. What have you contributed to the sport including tricks’ progression and/or invention??? You’re doing tricks from twenty years ago, that’s fine. But getting paid for it!!!!!!! You should be ashamed of yourself! You’re just a thief that is stealing from the art of flatland. You disgust me. This is my final reply, I have to go and ride and work on new tricks,so people like you can steal from me twenty years from now. I will not be reading anymore of these replies. Its a waste of my time with replies such as yours. You make me sick!

  • TurtleLove Says:

So Lame, quit bitching and go be HARDCORE.

  • tod.borndead Says:

I do see the difference between a no handed, one footed pumping blender and a pedaling death truck. I know the differences LOOK subtle, but the difficulty is a huge difference. I know because I have and do ride flat. Actually, I made the comment to my wife about how flatland doesn’t look as “cool” to the average person as say street or dirt…but if you have a “trained eye” for flatland…then you realize the differences in tricks…cross-footed, pumping vs. gliding…etc. I always say that flat is the hardest thing you can do on a bike, and I honestly believe that. It takes dedication and PERSERVEREnce like no other. Most humans can’t comprehend it, and so dismiss it. The level you ride at is mind blowing to most…and is thought of as unattainable. So when Joe Schmoo at a demo sees a Cherrypicker…he thinks to him/herself…”I can do that”, and feels more comfortable trying flatland out. Do you ever wonder why flatland has almost disappeared over the years? Because every year it looks more and more like a circus act. The level of riding is TOO hard for most people to wrap their brains around.

And yes, I do notice and appreciate that everything you did in your video is backwards, forwards and in circles…and in between other tricks. That is PROGRESSION. But the fact remains…the actual tricks are almost twenty years old. Kevin Jones is the last flatlander to be truely progressive in my eyes. He came up with whole new tricks and positions. I will give you this…you have been riding flatland at a pro level longer than anyone I have known. That is why the name of your video, Persevere is appropriate. You have done your time and given flat all you have, and I can respect that. I just want to say that I don’t sell myself short…I just wanted for people to understand that you should start riding for your own reasons, and not worry about what the pros think. If someone rides flat and does tricks that are twenty years old and that is what they want to do, then they shouldn’t worry about what other people think. Flatland is not an exclusive club, it is for everyone…including the 40 year old guy still doing lawnmowers and bar endos for money. The end…and thank you for replying and doing what you do.

  • Mustafa Abdul Hamdjarbudi Says:

you stupid motherfacker fuck yourself !

  • WARREN Says:

Dont´call me a thief.I don´t deceive the crowd I ´m not a Troglodyte! I even invented some tricks but who cares?I ´m just having fun and the crowd as well. Who said I´m getting paid for it? This is ridiculous-many modern day flatlanders are sissies:Skinny, tight jeans showing their underpants. It is the same here in Germany. Progression is a good thing- but the old stuff is not forbidden!.Just ask Kevin Jones, Chase, Trevor - watching their videos still eclipses todays riders. Mr. Brandt , your riding style is awesome but your opinions are not.

  • nobody Says:

Once again….it’s same argument, old skool vs. new skool, east vs. west, nature vs. nurture…pompous pro rider who thinks he invented stuff and feels he has earned the right shoot off his mouth without a thought for tact, old skool recreational rider who wants respect (and IMO deserves it as much as any pro) and artistic free license to ride however he wants. And the money? Who cares! If an old skooler wants to do a show for a few bucks and impresses a couple of kids with a bar ride , spurring a few new generation riders in the process, you don’t have to watch if you don’t want to. Instead of diss’ing people for their individual style preferences, why not work on what’s really important; get your agent to promote you to your satisfaction and try to make as much money as the pro skaters do. We don’t live in a vacuum. We all built our style off of something from the past, unless of course you never watched dorkin’ 4 (or any other vid for that matter), was raised with wolves, made your bike out of twigs and somehow managed to bust out a totally, unfathomably original trick. Why does everyone have to throw their nuts around pretending like they won “the coolest art fart” contest instead of just cohabitating and riding. Saying someone doesn’t deserve to ride for ANY reason, is like saying you don’t deserve to ever do anyone else’s tricks. Can you say size 12 Lotek in size 13 mouth?

  • tod.borndead Says:

I wonder if Kevin Jones gets royalty checks for all the tricks people bite from him? I kid, I kid…

  • reggie styles Says:

I got your back Pete because you paid your due’s! I started riding back in 83 when bmxfreestyle was just starting out at the age of 13 and never really stopped and not going to(I still work on progressing)! People that do old tricks in shows to make money flat out F*CKIN SUCK! I mean they give us a bad look hopping around in their gay ass leathers and helmet with mouth-gard!

  • tod.borndead Says:

Apparently there is a flatland god…

“Thou shall not make money off of old school riding.”

I would hope that people ride for their own reasons, and not worry about what fashion statement(leathers, mouth-guards)they are making, or worry that they look bad. Flat must be all about looking cool(sarcasm).

This has been a fun thread…I love stealing peoples cool!

  • Sean Parker Says:

Todd Pelio is fat fucking faggot that needs to quit check this site every five fucking minute and chiming the fuck in when dode not deserve to have a fucking opinion whatsoever. Norcal representing bitch.

  • Sean Parker Says:

THIS IS AN OPEN INVITATION FOR FOOLS TO CALL THEMSELVES OUT!
WELCOME TO YOUR OWN HELL, CUNTS

  • tod.borndead Says:

    Easy there, big guy…

I don’t know who Todd Pelio is, but don’t be mistaken…he is not the one making the comments. If that is why you are blowing a fuse, then you should know my name is Tod Miller, and I live in San Marcos Texas.

It is humorous to me watching meat heads blood boiling. Is is pretty easy to bait such shallow people with macho insecurities, and you do a pretty good job of making yourself look stupid.

I wasn’t going to reply, but then I thought I should “own” my words, and not let Todd Pelio take the blame for anything I said.

    The end…

  • Percy Marshall Says:

I agree with Pete. It is upsetting that people
go into shows and do that stuff. I know this because
I actually did join a tour but was fortunate enough
to realize that it wasn’t helping my riding progress,
so I quit after only a couple shows. I find that I am
progressing way faster when it’s just me and my bike
alone in an underground empty parkade. I could make
money from it, but it’s just not ethical. I can’t explain
it really right now, I just know it/.

  • Sean Parker Says:

“The End”? “Macho insecurities”? Not by a longshot, bitch. You are so far from the point of this interview, you don’t even know what the fuck you’re talking about. I don’t expect a single dollar from this sport. The point was that goofy motherfuckers ARE getting paid thousands for gay shit while others that push the sport and deserve a chance to shine get nothing.
Progression is the name of the game, so go ahead and hide in an empty parking lot and do infinity rolls by your damn self. Have a fucking blast, it still means nothing to the rest of the planet. Don’t worry about Todd Pelio either, I’ve already taken a few double cheeseburgers out of his mouth, but you and I have the beef now.
Thanks to the internet, I now know your name, address, phone number, and what your dumb ass looks like, not to mention my way around Texas like the back of my hand. The same hand that I will be bitch slapping you with.
I got an idea, if you are such a progressive flatland rider with such holy ideals for the sport, then why don’t you come out to the Intrikat jam in Long Beach in December and we can settle this like men? Or maybe you’ll just keep checking this page like a lifeless fag to attempt to get the last word. You played yourself.

  • WARREN Says:

Take a deep breath,Sean…..I´m a German rider, and no matter how you think about progress or “superrich riders” getting paid for doing old, easy tricks..I´ve got the strange feeling that todays flatlanders have forgotten about having fun….which is an alarming development. The message is: bring back the fun and unite oldschool and newschool riders.
    p.s.Yes, Kevin Jones is still my idol….even when he´s doing a (20year old)death-truck……

  • FBMFATBALDMEN Says:

WOW I mostly ride street so I really dont know that much about flat. BUT the only reason you guys get mad at those guys doing shows and doing old tricks and getting paid.. cos its not you and you aarent getting paid the money. When you invent a trick and 20 years later some guys getting paid for it who gives!! get over it!.If that guys getting paid good for him if that guy can get paid you can to and you could be paid more for doing new tricks.
if you can do what you love and get paid thats great.SO dont get all butt hert cos you think you own that trick if you guys care about those tricks so much get them pat.! haha you guys are very imature!

  • clp Says:

no its because flatlanders like pete care about the perserverance of the sport , and your right you know fuck all about flat so dont get involved , you call us immature yet cant even construct a decent argument , you totally missed petes point and dont know shit. Big up pete and everyone else in flat talking the truth and pushing the boundries as for you oldskool riders dont take it out on pete just because your to fucking lazy to persevere , if your happy doing old shit fro the 80s cool no problem but dont think that grants you the right to get offended when your tricks are slated by someone who works fucking HARD , if you dont relate its because you dont know .

  • Azhuri_19 Says:

Hey Pete! Looks like your bike is still doin good! I’m still suprized that you let me ride it when you were up here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for the Shows at the State Fair! =D haha it was great tho! are you goin to be back up here next summer? i’ll b workin @ the fair again, so i’ll b over watchin the shows every day! but that’s jus’ me ‘n my Liking to Biking lol….i’ve been trying to practice more with the bike you all signed, but i think that I’m goin to need a lighter frame than the IronHorse that i still have..but anyhow, like you said in your interview thingy, you DO bring new stuff to the table, even during the shows! you weren’t afraid of falling, or sketching a move up; it’z like the crowd jus’ pushed you to keep on tryin! keep up the great work Pete! If you’re ever back up here in Milwaukee, give a shout cuz’ i’ll b here, k? lol…keep in touch!

  • tod.borndead Says:

Wow, this thread is still going? I came back to this thread because I just read a similar thread on Global Flat, and I just wanted to see what was up here…because the thread on Global Flat just kept getting more and more retarded. It’s almost the same argument…old school vs. new school. But people there were being VERY immature. Wether anyone agrees on anything or not, there is no need to start calling people names. So after reading that thread, I just wanted to say “thanks” to Pete for keeping it very mature and professional. At least with me. As for Sean, well I didn’t appreciate the threats. To get so worked up about riding bikes…to the point of making threats to were we should handle this like “men”? Wow! Are you serious?!

Update to Pete. Pete, I have been slowly getting better at flat, even after 20 years away. I have actually learned a few “new” tricks…to me at least. And I still watch your video to get stoked.

  • mutt Says:

    LOOK
I AM NOT A MOUTHPIECE FOR ANYONE
PETE IS A FRIEND AND ONE OF MY MANY RIDERS
THATS ALL I GOT TO SAY AND ILL STICK UP TO THE TRUTH
AND ALOT OF YOU DONT KNOW IT I GUESS.

    SUCH BULLSHIOOT FOR ONE INTERVIEW!

    SUCKER FREE!

  • Azhuri_19 Says:

woohoo! && congrats to the kid with his first hitchhiker!
