The Quarter Pipes weren’t the only thing that was sketchy…we had to worry about our forks snapping in half. I was doing some flat back in the day, and I had a handler bar snap in half. I was left holding a grip and part of my bars. And this is from flatland!
Ah yes GTV. This was back when I started riding. I looked up to those guys for many years. Then they faded away when the 90’s came. If Josh had stayed in the game longer we could of seen some good vert battles between him and Mat Hoffman.
I think the “older school” was afraid of the new guys like Hoffman and Jones. We have everything to thank for guys like Hoffman and Jones. They took bmx into a whole different direction. Not to say that the “older school” didn’t blaze new beginnings. I have respect for all of them.
A lot of people got hurt from bikes being shitty back then. I think Taj talks about 1 1/8 forks being the best break through in bikes in his blog. There’s a reason. That started the whole “over built” phase of bikes. Kind of a backlash to shitty parts and frames. Now we see bikes getting lighter and lighter…but better built. I still cringe when I see Sean Burns huck himself on a five pound frame…no matter how well built Metal Bikes are made. The “light” bikes trend is getting dangerous.
Oh, and Hoffman talks about killing THREE frames a day while filming for videos back in the day. That was when he was on Haro. Can you imagine killing three frames a day? Everyone can say thank you to S@M, Standard, Homeless and Hoffman Bikes for making bikes better.

Who all was this? Eddie Fiola, Martin Aparijo…who else? Chris Lashua maybe? Josh White?
And then came the Plywood Hoods and Sprocket Jockeys to save the world.

I don’t understand the full face helmet riding flatland. The riding was better than I thought. Burly airs and crazy flatland skills.
