Wow…we are all so extremely happy to see this. Five months after rehab from a partial paralysis due to a serious head injury, Mike Aitken got back on a BMX bike and is 180ing and hopping around with a huge smile on his face. He’s got a lot of work to do as far as getting back to 100%, but Mikey is totally committed and we wish him all the best!

February 27th, 2009 at 11:37 am
i agree haha
its so great to see him back on his bike
February 27th, 2009 at 11:53 am
CDC would like to say that they are happy for mike too.
But there is a still a battle for gay rights!
They can’t even ride trails let alone skate parks.
If you were gay (I’m not,but my friends are) you would know the feeling of a forty bottle hitting you in the face at POSH.
Do you know that feeling? Didn’t think so.
Join the fight!
February 27th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
yeah thats what im talkin about. I hope you guys are ready for this come bacc!!!
February 27th, 2009 at 12:48 pm

February 27th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
yeah thats awesome to see mike riding again, keep it up mikey;)
February 27th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
I think you’re right but i’ve never heard about discrimination against gay riders. I think as a community we don’t really care about a rider being gay or straight, why don’t you just post that on the forums.
and yeah, it is good to see mike riding, even if it was just a couple bunnyhops, that tells you the guy is not gonna stop for a loooong time
February 27th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
shit

I am so stoked to see Mike up and riding again and even wearing a helmet. When I started riding back in the early 80’s at the start of the freestyle era, full face helmets were as common as brakes on your bike. We never wore them just for cruising around on the street, however my buddies and I would always put them on for dirt jumping and vert ramps. The magazines and videos in the day rarely showed a rider without one. The exact opposite is now true.
In the current era even if you show up at some trails or a concrete park with just an open faced brain bucket strapped to your head, you stick out like a sore thumb and are perceived as the odd man out. There is peer pressure to not wear one. All these web videos from Aitken benefit jams full of shredders without safety gear just about sums up the state of BMX as it relates to helmets. Helmets are perceived as unnecessary and uncool in the BMX community, which is really too bad in my opinion.

How stupid can you really be, do you really think the first thing you do on a bike after 3 weeks in a coma and 5 months working just to get your balance back is to go huck yourself 30 feet through the air. It looks like mike is doing it right to me getting the feel back. I also highly doubt he is back to the basics being this dialed on his first time back on his bike. Use your head for something josh and you will find life is a bit easier.
Mike, super stoked to see you doing it again, cant wait to see you killing the trails again.
February 27th, 2009 at 6:45 pm
It is great to see this, and I also feel that helmets need to start poping up more at skateparks trails wherever.
February 27th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
good to see mikey back doin what he does best, Ride for life, and that proves it right there
February 27th, 2009 at 8:31 pm

February 27th, 2009 at 8:58 pm

February 27th, 2009 at 9:48 pm

February 27th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
what’s that thing on his head?
February 27th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
no no not a sore thumb, more like a porn star dude with a condom.
February 27th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
my jaw dropped a litte then turned to the biggest smile when i read the title of the video. a big ear to ear grin for the whole video. it makes me insanely happy to see him on his feet let alone riding again. best of luck to you mike. i actually got a chance to meet mike at the 05 gravity games in philly. i blew out my tire and asked him if anyone had a spare that i could buy. he actually went back and looked for me. i didnt get one, but the fact that he actually made an effort ment a lot and i will always remember that. i could only donate $50 to his fund since im pretty poor, but id do it again in a heart beat. im going to fdr next week and i plan on wearing a helmet when im going for bigger tricks. when someone like mike goes down like he did it should be an eye opener to saftey. all he did was a 360 and crashed on dirt. what do you think would happen on concrete. good luck mike. im pulling for ya.
February 28th, 2009 at 12:16 am
keep that helmet on mikey! great to see u back on your bike
February 28th, 2009 at 1:07 am

much respect Mike ! great job !
February 28th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
I don’t really remember people wearing full face helmets in the 80’s. More like a regular helmet with a mouth guard. Remember Ron Wilkerson’s nasty vert crash at the AFA Masters. Ron wasn’t wearing a full face helmet, but now all the vert riders do. It didn’t really come into vogue until his crash. The sad part is, no one remembers his crash…we could have learned the helmet lesson a long time ago. Broken necks and backs are nothing new either…be careful out there kids!
February 28th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
just crashed and got back on his bike and hes still better than me nah but its nice to see mike back on his bike

March 29th, 2009 at 12:27 am
Okay you religious pile of shit, so what if someone is gay? Do you know if they’re going to hell? Where is hell? Did GOD tell you this bull shit? Don’t ever fucking bash on another gay person again. BMX’ing is a community. We are a family. Not a lot of people do it anymore. It’s a struggling sport. We need to stick together and appeal to reason. I’m straight and someone being a homosexual has no effect on me, nor should it to you. Have a good one asshole.
