Mike Aitken just released some of the footage of his recovery after crashing hard and being in a coma for three weeks. Mikey continues to recover more on a daily basis and still has a long road ahead of him. Keep showing your support…it means a lot and helps him a ton. If you are reading this, you need to watch this video.
Also, keep this in mind next time you jump on your bike for a session and don’t put on your helmet.
The following text is from the YouTube description:
“For the first time since his near fatal accident last fall BMX rider Mike Aitken has decided to release some of the pictures and footage of his recovery.
He feels it’s important to show the impact that one fall can have, and wants to share what it’s taken to try and get it all back.
Check out more at www.mikeaitken.com.”

Mike has always been one of my favourite riders. I’ve never understood why people refuse to wear a helmet. Think about what you’re risking. You could ruin your career, widow your wife, leave your kids fatherless. The main part of my job involves riding with kids and helping point their lives in a positive direction. I love it!!! It wouldn’t choose to do anything else. It would be pretty stupid to risk throwing away what I’ve got in order to look cool or be “more comfortable”.
This isn’t a shot at Mike by the way, its a shout out to all of you who still don’t wear a helmet. If Mike’s story doesn’t get to you maybe Fat Tony’s will. He isn’t a “pro rider” and his life almost ended when he faceplanted out of a rail. Check the video here: http://bmx.transworld.net/2008/09/16/my-skull-fracture-video/
That day could’ve been a lot worse than it was. It also could have been a lot better too if he’d worn a helmet.
(Fat’s video might not be working. The internet sucks here (one of the luxuries of my job) and I don’t have the patients to let it load.)

I couldn’t believe that after something like this happens none of the riders at x games street wore a helmet. Isn’t that the time you try thing you normally wouldn’t and could get hurt. I guess everyone does there own thing and takes their own risk. I”m glad he is recovering.

That was so deep, and i agree with mike, it does only take one bad fall and it all could go the wrong way. He has some good people around him to help, and support him. But when life throws you off the horse, you gotta get back on, become strong, and learn more from the situation. Be strong, Stay strong, and Go mike.

brought tears to my eyes… realy makes you realize how amazing but delicate we are as humans. I have slammed realy bad before, but got lucky with just a swolen face and demo’d shoulder and back. realy makes me think about if hucking it is even worth it…. but then … life sure would be missing something without a good huck now and then!

An inspiration to all generations of bmx…For the love of the sport and the love of life…we ride on.
Looking forward to seeing you ride again Mikey.
This event alone made me double check for my helmet every time I hit my local trails.

August 10th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
its weird you’d think everone on fit would be rockin a helmet now, like how about these sponsers requiring there team riders to wear a helmet, i mean they are pushed and pressured to go bigger and do shit with more consiquence , somethings gotta give, and even you, ” ride bmx dot com,” what example are you trying to show these kids, look below and above this video, they are edits with dudes wearing no helmet..
August 10th, 2009 at 5:04 pm

August 28th, 2009 at 6:31 am
It amazes me how well he is recovering. Mike you are the man of all men! I’m sure with how hard you are pushing you will make a full recovery. You’re the most inspirational rider of all time! On and off the bike. Just remember ” What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” You’re always in my prayers Mike! When it comes down to it, no one tops Aitken! Best style and all the crazy tricks to come with it.
In march I was in the hospital for a ruptured spleen and a fractured kidney and I almost didn’t make it. On one of my last couple days in the hospital I was having the hardest time trying to keep myself motivated to keep riding. I had been soooo close to death I just didn’t think I could handle one more fall. But the day I got home I watched Fit Life and while I was watching your part it hit me. I can’t quit now, I love it way to much. It was right after that that my friend showed me the video of you riding infront of a house after your fall. It was the most inspirational video I have ever seen. You are the reason I am back on my bike Mike and I hope this means a little something to you. Because it meant the world to me!
