For the fourth week in a row we are bringing you more bike maintenance tips. This week’s how-to video comes from Epic BMX shop again where Loc Vu shows you how to properly size and install a new chain on your bike.
To size a chain, you will need a chain breaker. These specific tools can be purchased at a bike shop or through a mail order company.
Filmed by Fat. Edited by Daniel Kusenda.
You can also download a .PDF of how to install and remove a chain from the Dan’s Comp Web site.
Park Tools also has a lot of information on different types of chains and links as it pertains to sizing and breaking them.

HI ridebmx. We appreciate the 101 bike repair how tos. But a steve hamiltion style tire slide how to would be way more interesting.
Or how about Fudger showing us how to do that pop out the pool to manual sharp turn to feeble down a rail back into the pool which he did on the old Dirtbros video. That was epic!

if the chain is so tight that you have to pop it on with the cranks, how do you take it off?

you dont need a chain breaker to do this?! all you have to do is put the chain in a vice, with the links your going to remove sticking out of one side of the vice, then get something metal thats thin enough to go threw the hole, EX: coathanger, etc. then you push it in as hard as you can, or hammer it, then to put it back in, all you have to do is use pliers and thats it! not that hard, all you have to do is use your brain…

The average kid probably has a chain tool over a vice. But yeah, you can do it with a vice, a hammer, or a pair of pliers…you can also do a lot of things really inefficiently.

its a sick bike!!
April 7th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
you gota ride a bit n let the chain stretch. why would you take off a good chain?
April 7th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
just get a master link instead of dealing with all that pain staking bull with breakers n measuring. they usually come with the chain when you buy it

Doesn’t it suck how it’s TIGHT at first, but then after you use it it’s all loose and boring? Ha.
April 9th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
The master link is the weakest link, and a chain is only as strong as its weakest link..
April 10th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
it would be best to just get a park ct-5 chain breaker for 15 bucks it works great and dosent fuck up ur bike like a dumbass would with a vice
April 11th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
ehh its still as strong as a normal chain link. if anything its slightly weaker but its not any weaker because it has a clip on it
April 11th, 2009 at 11:08 pm

July 1st, 2009 at 1:37 am
small propain tank, lighter to chain it melts off it works and its fuckin sick
July 17th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
a) the master link will definitely be stronger than a link that’s been reassembled
b) don’t you think its weird he only used half the chain breaker? maybe the other half has a purpose?
