Odyssey’s Jim Bauer explains how to install a mid bottom bracket into a Federal frame. This is a simple bike maintenance how-to that can help anyone from beginners to pros. If you still aren’t sure what to do after watching this tutorial, get your parents to watch it and help you out. Also your local bike shop is always a great place to go for bike repairs and assistance.

Great vid ride, is there anyway you could put one up on how to take a BB out?
March 23rd, 2009 at 11:26 am
probably should have mentioned that the middle spacer comes in all sorts of sizes and that it cannot be wobbling or be too tight between the bearings.
March 23rd, 2009 at 12:38 pm
yeah how do u remove the bb
March 23rd, 2009 at 1:25 pm
wtf it isnt showing the pic only audio
March 23rd, 2009 at 2:42 pm
if you use a hammer place a piece of wood between the hammer and the bearing, so the wood gets all the dents and not the metal
March 23rd, 2009 at 7:24 pm
Removing a BB is pretty simple, but can easily cause damage to the bearings.
You can use a punch/screwdriver/old axle to move the spacer of center of the bearings. You leverage the tool up or down to get the spacer off center so the center race of the bearing has a flat part exposed to hammer out. After that, its as simple as hammering out the bearing from the opposite side. I wouldn’t use a screwdriver because that will surely dig into the race or slip into the bearing seal. An aluminum rod is good because its softer than the bearing race. Any large flat metal blunt object should work. Pointed hard tools should be avoided. As soon as you hit the bearing once or twice the center spacer should be loose enough to work around the bearing if you have too. The fewer (but harder) hits the better. It should pop right out. After one is out, remove the spacer and the other side is wide open to hammer out. Now you have a better selection of tools to use to hammer the other bearing out, because you have no bearing in the way.

correction: “spacer OFF center of the bearings” not “OF”
March 23rd, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Ha ha!
Agreed! Taking them out is always way harder then getting them in.

Hey, I made a Bearing Press with a big ass bolt, washers and some nuts. It works great! Also, great video Jim! You guys @ Odyssey should produce my wedge pivotal post I made in the how-to section! Haha Just Kidding

June 11th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

August 15th, 2009 at 4:56 am
i installed my bottom brackets in today, the same way they did in this video. i have 19mm sealed mid bb, should the inside of the bearings spin? i put my bearings in and the spacer was between them but should the inside of the bearings spin where its silver? cheers Josh
August 21st, 2009 at 3:39 pm
is there anything else u have to do when converting from unsealed because i have the odyssey mid bb sealed’s and they seem a bit rough and wont go in
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:24 am
Yes they should spin, this is the whole point of bearings.
August 23rd, 2009 at 12:23 pm

thanks 4 da vid jim. saved me like 3 days and £40 from my local bike shop. for that press just use an axle from an old wheel and find loads of spacers from your garage. also does it matter what way around the bearings go in? i put them in the wrong way on my headset and it caused me to need a new headset, forks and frame!!! once again thanks

I got my son one of those airsoft guns its fantastic, I was afraid at first that it would hurt his friends when they shot each other. I had to get him this airsoft rifle cause he wanted a BB gun, and yeah that wasnt going to happen. I remember when I was a kid and shot out the neighboors window with my BB gun. http://www.twitter.com/hobbywarehouse

to Barclay: basically the only way is to hammer the spindle to get it out as long as its a sealed BB. if its a looseball then you need to loosen the big nut on the non-drive side by turning it clockwise.
September 20th, 2009 at 7:25 am
it was a well-made vid but theres more to think about. first, the center spacer has to have the exact (at most less than 1mm difference) correct length, if its too long then the bearings wont fit in and if its too short then spacers wont do its job. second, its hard to line up the inner races of the bearings and the spacer in one straight line. if you press in the 2nd bearing without having them straight, the spindle wont go in. so you need to make sure while pressing in the bearing that the spacers are straight. so its gonna be like press in a little, check, press in a little, check…. and so on.
