Dammit. Riders at a benifit jam for an injured rider riding without helmets… What does this say? Why would they choose to make this statement? How does their image affect the image of the sport as a whole??

It’s great to see all the jams goin down out there for Mike. I have to say though, I, personally, don’t think it’s right to ride in a Jam to benefit a guy with a head injury when you’re not even willing to throw on a helmet. If anything these jams should promote helmets, not add to the myth that no one wears them. I think Mike would agree. I know it’s a personal choice, but think of all the people who’s lives you’d effect if you were to sustain a head injury that you never recovered from. Your friends and family would be devastated. It seems kind of selfish to me.
Anyway, stay strong Mikey and Steven, and please keep it safe out there, guys.

Stephen’s words tugged on the heart strings.
I think the fact the riders weren’t wearing helmets is a bit of a non-issue. Bike riding is dangerous, even more so when you don’t wear a helmet. Everybody knows that. Every pro could wear a helmet but it wouldn’t make a kid on the street anymore likely to do the same; its an individual choice we all make and I don’t think the pros have to sacrifice that choice just because they are sponsored by bike companies.

That was a really nice jam, and all the riders giving their word out to Mikey was insane. And Stephen Murray, I had shivers the whole time he was talking, to be there and watch those guys ride and to support some one who also had a bad accident and who is getting up from it, woah…seriously shook me.

The companies who sponsor these highly skilled professional BMX riders and are making a sizeable profit from their abilities should be paying for a health insurance plan for them. I am sure these companies CEO’s, etc. have health insurance. I have seen more than a few pro BMX riders have this same thing happen to them over the years and it is not right.

Thanks Stephen for reminding me of true courage.
I’m glad to hear you are doing well Mikey…
December 1st, 2008 at 12:13 pm
I am glad both Stephen and Mike are doing well but seriously, wear a helmet. Do you like holding benefit jams for injured riders? Why not try and prevent them? Sure Murray was wearing a helmet and he broke his neck, a helmet isn’t going to save you from something like that, but it’s going to help a great deal and preventing a coma and or death, and if Mike decides there are more important things then riding I hope people can support his decision.
