The third stop of the tour is the first stop where they do not have open qualifying. So tonight 27 riders went head to head to compete for just nine spots to make up the 12-man final that will take place tomorrow night. Cameron White, Ryan Nyquist, and James Foster are the top points leaders in this year’s Tour so they didn’t have to ride in the qualifying round.
The big shock of the day was Cory Nastazio qualifying first. After dropping out of the spotlight for a few years it is obvious that Cory is back in full force and better than ever. His run included a frontflip followed by a backflip into the 360 berm, then a 360 flip over the last set. That’s right, I said a 360 berm…
The course here in Portland is pretty wild. There is the Nike 6.0 kicker drop in straight into a quick lip. That’s followed by a big double, then a right hand hip straight into a 360 berm that kicks you out over another small table jump. Then there is open space for a few hard cranks (yes, you actually have to pedal) before the last big set. Then if you choose, you can hit a small berm before going up a dirt quarter built into the side of the first jump. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen at a Dew Tour thus far and from the looks of the runs we just saw, the riders are already used to it.
Besides Cory’s stellar run to secure his first place position, some of the other highlights of the evening were:
- Diogo Canina did an enormous 360 table, opposite 360 lookback, then an 810 (I think?) into the hip and a 360 double whip over the last set.
- Ryan Guettler put together a run that consisted of two flawless 720s.
- Dennis Enarson somehow managed to flipwhip the first set—the lip on that jump comes up really quick after coming in off the kicker drop in.
- Stevie McCann did a bar hop on the hip. Heck yeah!
- AA Pro racer Nate Berkheimer did a backflip down the kicker and a frontie over the hip into the berm.
- After slipping a pedal on a no-footed can-can on the kicker and having a wash first run, Corey Bohan had a perfect second run consisting of a 360 one-footed table, opposite 360 (forget which variation in that one), 360 into the berm, and barspin to whip over the last set.
- Brandon Dosch did a decade over the hip.
- Brian Hunt recently broke his jaw and rode with his mouth wired shut.
