At Interbike S&M introduced an entire bike that had a lot of crazy bells and whistles on it. One of the things that stood out to everyone was the drive train…

The chain was much smaller in the sense that all the plates were smaller—like it was shrunken down. This meant that the sprocket and rear cog teeth had been downsized also. Well, it looks like S&M may be about ready to move forward with the new, smaller chain concept as they just posted some news and photos on their site about it. Here’s what they had to say…

Notice how the newer chain on the left has many more pins and plates, and the sprocket has many more teeth then traditional chains and sprockets (shown on the right).

“…It’s a 3/8 x 1/8 instead of the wimpy 1/2 x 1/8. It also has a lot more pins and added teeth to the sprocket… So yes there will still be a redesigned sprocket also.
Overall we wanted a chain that would be tough as bricks and never go limp…
we didn’t even dance around weight issue, you won’t see no cut out plates and hollowed pins on this bad boy! ” - S&M Bikes

Here’s the video from Interbike with a look at S&M’s “WTF” bike and the 3/8 x 1/8 chain in question.

Speaking of new chains…I know DK has been cooking up something relatively secretive over in Ohio and I’m wondering when the news on that one is going to drop…
