Big Surprise at Brunn am Gebirge: the Austrians managed to repeat their legendary Córdoba victory over the Germans! At SENAD’S CORDOBA 2008, Senad Grosic’s Austrian team won by 4:3 over Tobias Wicke’s Germans. The friendly match combining BMX and football was decided by a penalty shoot-out.
30 years after the legendary victory of the Austrians over the Germans at the 1978 football world championships at Córdoba, Argentina, the everlasting duel between Germany and Austria was carried out in a slightly different way than usual: two teams with BMX pros from both countries were competing not only in BMX disciplines but also in football-related sports like BMX football or table football.

June 14 2008, 4 pm. BMX-Halle Brunn am Gebirge, Austria. In their red respectively white jerseys, the two teams enter the “stadium”. After singing the national hymns, team captains Senad Grosic and Tobi Wicke swap the pennants. The look of the players reminds the spectators of 1978: long hair, headbands, moustaches. The Hungarian BMX daredevils Danny Josa and Boldizsar „Bobo” Ujvari act as judges.
The big match begins with the Highest Air contest. First, German Sergej Geier meets Austrian Gregor Waldner. The German reaches the 5.5-metre mark and takes the points. Then the two captains: Wicke flies higher than Grosic, the German team wins the highest air competition: 1:0 for Germany!

The next discipline follows directly: table football. Germany is represented by Torsten Hohlfeld and Hans Friedrich, Austria by Markus Ridlberger and Geronimo Hirschal. And they manage to equalize: 1:1. The crowd goes crazy and waves the flags.
Then the Best Run contest: tricks like Backflip Double Tailwhip or Flair Lookback make the crowd go wild. Patrick Groß puts the Germans into lead against Michael Bloch. But the Austrians strike back: Senad Grosic equalizes against Tobi Wicke and Benno Hankowetz takes the decisive heat against Björn Mager. Austria leads 2:1! And they also win the following Guitar Hero Contest increasing their lead to 3:1!
Half-time. Then the first duel at the Best Trick contest: Markus Braumann versus Austrian Michi Rockita. With a Tailwhip to 360 Tailwhip, Braumann puts the Germans into lead. The following duel between Wicke and Grosic ends without a decision. Then, Patrick Groß shows a Tailwhip to Manual to Barspin and wins over Benno Hankowetz. The Germans catch up: 2:3!

The spectators await the final BMX football match full of suspense. The format: 2 x 20 minutes, three Germans versus three Austrians. In the second minute, Tobias Wicke scores for Germany. The Austrians try to equalize, but in the tenth minute, Waldner only hits the post. The match ends 1:0 for the German team equalizing the all-over score: 3:3!
Now a penalty shoot-out has to decide who would win SENAD’S CORDOBA 2008. And then, the Austrians cause a sensation: They win 2:0, taking the all-over title with a 4:3 victory! Despite that, Germany’s captain Tobias Wicke is satisfied with the result: “We are super happy! We only took the second place but I don’t begrudge the Austrians the victory.” And Senad Grosic adds: “It’s absolutely insane that we were able to repeat the Córdoba victory! Now we’ll celebrate!”

So now the pressure is on the Austrian football team to repeat the BMX riders’ victory tonight at the EURO match against the Germans….
