Each year nearly 250,000 people attend Harborfest, a 4 day festival in Oswego, New York. Harborfest provides a wide variety of events, entertainment and a world-class fireworks display over Lake Ontario each July. This year, Harborfest organizers seek to add a new headline event to the offering, namely a BMX weekend culminating in an invite-only Pro-Am competition on Saturday, July 25th, 2009.
The idea for the contest originally came from two local non-profit parks, Freedom and Red Planet, to organize a competition as a fundraiser to keep both parks free or low-cost. Both Freedom and Red Planet are committed to ensuring that safe, quality facilities are available to all riders, regardless of ability to pay. In typical BMX style, this event has grown from being a dream to an absolute reality through the grassroots efforts of many of our fellow like-minded companies, all of whom support action sports and giving riders a place of their own to enjoy their sport of choice.
Friday, July 24th will consist of a day of demos and Saturday we will continue the demos with the contest beginning at 4pm. The contest will be an invite-only with 35 riders. There will be jam style heats with heat winners progressing to the finals. Harborshred ‘09 has a $5,000 contest purse and a separate prize for “best trick”.
We look forward to seeing you at Harborshred ‘09 and thank you in advance for your help and support to keep parks free and available to all riders.
