I’ll admit I didn’t know what to expect when I heard about the Lucky Camper Contest, but as soon as I saw the contestants warming up I could tell things were going to get crazy. The campers had two 45-second runs, plus a single 10-second “glory run” to pull one last showstopper. With the chance to win a spot on one of five Mongoose Jam pro teams, things got out of hand to say the least.

“With the official start of Mongoose Jam tomorrow, nineteen Woodward East campers competed in an amateur park contest today for a coveted spot on one of five Mongoose Jam pro teams. Each team will be captained by Mongoose athletes Steve McCann, Greg Illingworth, Paul Ryan, Ben Wallace, and Kevin Peraza.

“Woodward East’s Lot 8 was filled with action sports campers rooting on riders as they went head to head. The nineteen campers each had two 45 second opportunities for individual runs and one 10 second glory trick to further highlight their skills.

Each camper showed a ton of talent and threw down pro-like moves- big flip whips, flares, Superman seatgrabs, front flips and many more. In the end, five lucky riders earned a spot to compete with the pros in the Mongoose Jam. Shane Goldsmid, Stephane Sum, Jack Straiton, Jack Mould, and Freddie Smith will be riding with their team captains tomorrow starting with the Pro Park contest.

After the judges picked the top five riders, campers participated in a blind draw to find their Mongoose team for the week.”
