What was it like on the AccessBMX trip?
{When I was shooting} the cover I had (Ride April, 2003), I kept doing the same trick, but when you get to a certain point, you get stuck. I went down with the ship and hit my head pretty good… It was the fastest car ride home from Phoenix, AZ, to San Diego, CA. I guess the whole time I would look back and say, “Yeah, that’s who I thought was on the trip.” It was Brian Castillo, Van Homan, and Dave Osato in the car and then they would tell me Taj was on the trip and my response the whole trip home was, “I was on a trip with Taj!” I don’t know, it was cool.

That was around the same time that you got three covers in one month; what was your reaction to that?
It was an honor, I couldn’t really believe it. The first one I saw was TransworldBMX and I was just so excited. And right about the same time I was talking to Jeff Z and he was saying that he wouldn’t be surprised if I got another one, but I didn’t really think anything more about it. Then I saw the Dig one and I was like, “Whoa, that’s weird, two covers in one month. That’s crazy.” Then I went by the Ride office and I got that cover and there was nothing I could say.

If {your hair is} getting in your eyes, don’t you think you’re not going fast enough?
Uh, it’s on fakie tricks.

How can you be so good on a bike, but not be able to throw farther than your girlfriend?
I’ll have you know that we throw about the same distance.

(At this point, Gary and his girlfriend debate who can throw farther and end up out back to have an Odyssey seat-throwing contest. Gary wins by an overwhelming five feet)

Mark Losey thinks you’re one of the nicest guys in BMX, but I’ve come to know the real you. When are you going to drop the façade?
I don’t think it’s a façade {laughs}. I think I really am a nice guy, you’re just jaded from me being mean to you only because you were more mean to me my whole life {laughs}. Or maybe it has something to do with Mark and others just being nice… I don’t know {laughs}.

You’ve been with your girlfriend for four years; is it hard when you travel during the summer?
Yes. It is hard because I enjoy hanging out with her and I miss her. However, I think when I am gone it is harder on her because I’m constantly doing new things. She does handle it well by focusing harder on school and other aspects of her life. We support each other in what we do and that is a very important part to making our relationship work. Also we balance each other out and she has taught me a lot about not being frugal and spending money on myself.

For $100 right now, would you drink a glass of soda?
I don’t know, I took some calcium supplements today, it couldn’t hurt too bad. If there was ice cream in that soda it would be a much sweeter deal, it’d take some of the bubbles out anyway. I think I’d get a tummy ache though {laughs}.
