The first stop of this year’s Dew Tour in Chicago will be all about BMX—no skateboarding and no motocross. As usual we will be on hand at the contest to deliver up to the minute coverage including results, photos, and videos, and we can’t wait!
Everything gets started on Thursday June 24th with open qualifying and finals conclude on Saturday night the 27th. Also, for the first time ever at Dew Tour Nike 6.0 is having a Street Specialty Competition where three teams of three street riders will have to film and edit a video while riding a specially-built street course. The teams will also be allowed to move around our Ride BMX ramp that was featured on the cover of last month’s issue to help them make some wild setups. On Saturday we will post all three teams’ videos on the site and you guys will be able to vote for your favorite Standout Rider from the contest, and that rider will win $1,000!
Part of what is so exciting about the Dew Tour is all the new tricks that get thrown out during the year. At just about each stop of the series something that has never been seen before in competition is unveiled, pushing the progression of BMX that much farther. We are on edge just thinking about what may go down this year, but until then here is a list of nine tricks that were first pulled in competition at the Dew Tour.
What tricks would you like to see this year? Let us know in the comments!
Quadruple Tailwhip - Mike Spinner
At the Cleveland stop of the 2008 Dew Tour everyone knew what to expect when Mike Spinner dropped in. He had posted a clip on YouTube the previous week of him doing a quad whip on a resi ramp so the world was waiting for him to land it in competition. And just like that Mike dropped in, hit the box, and one, two, three, four times the bike spun around making history and leaving Spinner smiling for days.
Canonball Double Barspin - Ryan Nyquist
Otherwise known as the Powerball, Ryan Nyquist landed a double barspin cannonball in the dirt competition at the Baltimore stop of the 2008 Dew Tour. Ryan has been a master of the barspin for years and this one helped redefine how many variations there are of the staple trick.
720 Double Barspin - Ryan Nyquist
Again, Ryan is without a doubt a master at barspins and made this list of firsts with another double barspin variation. In his 2004 “Drop The Hammer” video part Ryan debuted the world’s first 720 barspin. Then in his 2008 “End Search” video part he one-upped himself and did a 720 double barspin. And finally, at the Baltimore stop of the 2008 Dew Tour he pulled the 720 double barspin for the first time in a competition.
Tailwhip To Tailwhip Back On Vert - Zack Warden
After Matt Sparks pulled what seemed to be impossible on a box jump, Zack Warden Warden upped the anti by pulling it on a 12-foot vert ramp. The tailwhip to tailwhip back, also known as the windshield wiper, was brought to half pipe for the first time at the Baltimore stop of the 2008 Dew Tour and is one of those tricks that will never become commonplace in the sport as very few people in the world will ever have the guts to try it, or the skill to land it.
Inverted 720 Can-Can - Daniel Dhers
Not quite upside down, but definitely far from right side up, Daniel Dhers is well known for his wild looking corked out 720s over box jumps. At the 2008 Portland stop of the Dew Tour Daniel decided to let the world know he has his signature trick so dialed he can do multiple variations of it. To prove his point he started off by doing a can-can in the middle of the double spin. Other variations of the inverted 720 that Daniel has unleashed at Dew Tour include a barspin and a no-hander.
We have footage of this trick, but it is so fast and so difficult to see a photo actually does it better justice. Photo by Fat.
Backflip Barspin To Tailwhip - Cameron White
Combinations like this are incredibly difficult to comprehend and even more impossible to pull, which is why after nearly two years Cam White is still the only rider to ever do a backflip barspin to tailwhip. In this combo Cam includes three tricks that are each difficult on their own and puts them together flawlessly. To add to that he did it on the first set and followed up with more bangers throughout the section.
Frontflip Tailwhip - Scotty Cranmer
Just a short time after pulling the world’s first ever frontflip tailwhip at his home park in Lakewood, New Jersey Scotty Cranmer pulled one for the first time in competition at the Salt Lake City stop of the Tour in 2007. When people started to think about this trick the physics behind it seemed impossible for many years, but somehow Scotty figured out a way to beat science and got it done. Since then very few riders have been able to figure it out on their own and land the frontflip whip.
1080 On Dirt - Ryan Guettler
After Mike Spinner pulled the world’s first 1080 it was quite a while before anyone else landed three rotations, but when they did it was Ryan Guettler, and he did it on a dirt jump at Orlando stop of the 2007 Dew Tour. And even though Guettler is given credit for being the first to do it on dirt, Diogo Canina also did one during the same contest just after Guettler pulled his.
Triple Tailwhip On Vert - Francisco “Coco” Zurita
It was only a matter of time before someone took the illusive triple tailwhip to the halfpipe. Chille’s Coco Zurita was the one to do it, and he did so at the Cleveland stop of the Tour in 2007. A few others have since tried, and just recently Steve McCann finally became the second person to land a triple whip on vert in competition. Will anyone ever bring Mike Spinner’s quadruple tailwhip to vert? I can’t imagineit, and for their safety I hope not, but then again there are plenty of tricks on this list that I never thought I would see, so only time will tell for sure… (Sorry, couldn’t find any footage of this one.)
*Thanks to Dew Tour, Will Stroud, and random YouTube users for some of these video clips!

I believe Jay Miron might have done the first 720 barspins. And Mat Hoffman did the first triple whips on vert. I could be mistaken on both of these though.

June 22nd, 2009 at 8:22 pm
all this is cool and all, it’s fun to try and see how far tricks can go, and people shouldn’t stop trying those, but to me it IS becoming a circus act.
I mean, there’s a fine line between awesome and ridiculous. Try a double-whip w/ a 40-pound bike at the 90’s is great, manly even. Bust a billion-whip w/ an 8 pound bike is a joke, man.
It’s like a flatlander trying to spin a billion times instead of spinning a few, then moving on with the routine, you know?
If there’s a giant gap on a course, say from 2 far away quarters, I’d rather see someone busting a huge one-handed, slow-spinning single whip than trying a 30 whip…
And no, it’s not cuz I can’t do them, probably neither can 99% of you…
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:10 pm
I did a my first 360 barspin to downside whip on dirt in finals in portland in ‘06. I was psyched.
June 22nd, 2009 at 11:50 pm
Strange how all the vids of the firsts are of the tricks except Spinners is a Nike advert mostly featuring Garret Reynolds.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:49 pm
shut the fuck up. its not about style or none of that shit. its about having fun and pushing to the limit. thats what these guys are doing. besides wouldnt you want to make that bank? doing what you love? circus tricks are way more bad ass to do then a stupid table or landing flat from a 10 stair. maybe you should try sometime. its alot of fun.
June 23rd, 2009 at 1:53 pm
oh yeah i do agree with you on the quad whip. that really didnt impress me. maybe if he did it on a quarter..
June 23rd, 2009 at 2:24 pm
