Why do you run disk brakes?
Because I’m a kook. No, actually I’ve wanted to run a disk brake for two years. Mike Flaherty (Atomic) was on the forefront of this technology. He had the adapter kit, and the guys at Dia Tech are really cool and they wanted me to do it. So, I morphed the two kits together and it seems to be working really well. There’s no weight difference, and it’s cool with trails because I don’t always ride that smooth and if I bend my rim I can keep riding. So far it’s working out.

Do they work better than V brakes?
I think if you were to use hydraulic brakes they would work better, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a better or worse feel, it’s just a little different. The way I have them set up now, they work just as good as any V brake out there. You just have to learn to modulate them like anything else. They’re great for racing and trails.

Is there more or less work involved with disk brakes?
I think at first it’s a little more work, because it’s different. It’s a new technology to BMX. But once there dialed in, they’re ready to go. Even V brakes can be temperamental and a little delicate at times. I’d say that they’re a little more work, but nothing to stress about.
