Todd Lyons’ Intruder Pro XL

Any personal modifications? I cut the flanges on the grips; I’ve been flangeless for a decade now (laughter). What parts do you go through the fastest? It used to be pedals…I’m not trying to hype up Odyssey here, but since I’ve gotten South Gate pedals, I haven’t bent pedals in eight months. I used to have trouble with seat guts too, but I hardly ever bend them anymore. Anything else worth noting? I’m back and forth between 180 and 175mm cranks. I tried 175mm cranks at one race this summer, but I wasn’t in good enough shape to push them. This winter, I think I’ll start running them—my legs are about six inches shorter than most of the other double-As. How often do you work on your bike? When I was younger, my dad used to make me clean my bike after every race, but now, I don’t even wipe my bike down anymore. My brake cable will be frayed, my tires will be bald—I don’t work on my bike unless I have to. Why the street tire in the back? It’s good on asphalt turns, on the dirt tracks, the trails…I’d be so nervous with a knobby compared to the street tire. Even when it’s worn down, it’s still good. Why is your brake lever so beat? I run it kind of high, so when I crash, my brake lever takes it. Until it snaps off, I’ll use it. Is this one of the lightest bikes you’ve ever been on? Yeah; the whole bike’s probably not the lightest, because I’m not looking to save a lot of weight with titanium stuff or aluminum forks, but the frame is lighter than any of the others I’ve ridden over the years. I’m just now starting to be more weight-conscious with my race bike. Why do you use a zip tie when you’ve got cable guides on your frame? I cannot and will not ever use cable guides; I think they’re a hoax (laughter). I don’t want to spend that much time cutting the housing and feeding my cable through there…I’m not that trick. How would you describe your bike? It’s my dirty little buddy.
