How long do you typically ride a bike before building a new one? Do you switch out parts as they go? Or just build a whole fresh kit?
I usually try to build up an entirely new bike when I get a new frame. I change frames every 3-6 months depending on the amount of abuse they’ve taken. Within that time I just replace parts as they bend/break.
What parts do you change out the most often
I end up replacing pedals more often than anything—plastics tend to wear quick from crank arm grinds and my bike is always falling in some weird fashion causing the spindles to bend. Fiend grips come pretty soft out of the package so I usually go through a set every month or two.
What are you most particular about on your bike?
Grips and seat—I haven’t changed my set up in years. Mushroom [style] grips and fat capital seats for life.
How long have you been running the freecoaster for? And what are your thoughts on it?
I think I started riding a coaster in February/March, so… about four-five months? I think it’s awesome and I don’t see myself going back anytime soon.
It seems like you made your front end a little taller as of recently, is that right? How is that feeling for you?
Yeah, I stepped up to the 9” bars from 8.75”, shortened my toptube, and tried steeper forks a couple months ago. I wanted my bike to feel a little more snappy and it did the trick.
I’m diggin’ the photo inspired headtube sticker, what other Ty specific specs are on the frame?
Thanks. Kevin Conners and I rushed the graphics last minute so I’m glad we got something we were both happy with for the time being. As far as the specs go; I wanted a higher bottom bracket (11.8” instead of 11.625”) for crooked grinds, more round shaped dropouts, shaved down welds on the inside of the dropouts for proper hub guard fitting and more classic shaped headset & BB cups.
Tell us more about the Fiend cranks and the unique bolt system…
It’s a pretty simple wedge system. The cranks slide on with ease, you tighten down the spindle bolt and then tighten the smaller, pinch-style bolt below to press the wedge into the spindle. I’ve ridden mine for almost three months and haven’t had to tighten them once.
