Last night the unsuspecting small college town of DeKalb, Illinois was host to the first ASA BMX Triples contest of 2010. Twelve riders went head to head in a bracket format battle before whittling the group down to just two riders-Scotty Cranmer and Ryan Nyquist. Everyone threw down some amazing runs and had bangers of their own, but in the end Scotty was able to walk away with the win. Check out some of the highlights here along with the bracket results and a photo of each rider.

2010 ASA BMX Triples - DeKalb, Illinois

The course setup is kind of like a mini megaramp…big as hell, super intimidating, and built for gnarly tricks.

If you aren’t familiar with the ASA BMX Triples contests, here’s the breakdown in a nutshell… A big roll in, a 21ft wooden double, an eight foot lip for a 14ft long double, then a ten foot tall quarter pipe. Twelve riders are put into brackets and go head to head, getting two runs each. Each of the three obstacles count as a third of the run. Three judges make a call as to which rider advances based off of the best of the two runs. Riders get bumped out until only one is left. Got it? Good. So here’s what went down…

Preliminary Rounds
Brett Banasiewicz beat out Craig Masts’ triple whip, double whip, and 540 with a frontflip, triple whip, and flair whip.

Scotty Cranmer’s flipwhip, triple whip, and flair beat Brandon Dosch’s 720, 360 double whip, and double whip.

Ryan Nyquist’s truck, 720, and huge 540 barspin beat Austin Coleman’s flipwhip, barspin, and no-handed flair.

Daniel Dhers’ 720, truck to whip, and double whip beat Colton Sattierfield’s 360 double whip, 360 flip (with a case), and flair.

Zack Warden’s double whip, truck to whip, and bike flip beat Rob Darden’s 720, 360 double whip, and flair.

Dustin Griess’ 360 double whip, frontflip, and flair beat Koji Kraft’s turndown flip, flip whip, and tailwhip.

Quarter Finals Rounds
Scotty Cranmer’s barspin drop in, flipwhip, triple whip, and x-up flair beat Brett Banasiewicz’s frontflip, triple whip, and flair whip.

Daniel Dhers’ 720, 720 can-can, and no-footed can-can to whip beat Ryan Nyquist’s barspin flip, 720 barspin, and crash on the quarter.

Zack Warden’s truck to whip, bikeflip, and double whip beat Dustin Griess’ 360 double whip, frontflip, and flair.

Semifinal Rounds
Scotty Cranmer’s barspin drop in, flip double whip, triple whip, and flair x-up narrowly beat Daniel Dhers’ 720, 720 barspin to can-can, and double whip.

Ryan Nyquist’s barspin flip, nothing to double barspin, and 540 double barspin beat Zack Warden’s truck to whip, 360 bikeflip, and double whip. It was super close on this one, but the fact that Warden took some cranks after the 360 bikeflip before hitting the quarter was part of the deciding factor for the judges.

Final Round – Scotty Cranmer -vs- Ryan Nyquist
Both riders threw down amazing runs in previous rounds, but on their first runs of this round both of them crashed. This made it pretty exciting because it all came down to who could put it together at the very last seconds of the contest. Then both of them took their second and final runs, and both of them nailed incredible tricks… Scotty Cranmer did a barspin drop in, flip double whip, no-handed frontflip, and flair x-up. Ryan Nyquist did a barspin flip, cannonball double barspin, and 540 double barspin. The fact that Scotty did the barspin drop in, and Nyquist had to take a few cranks before hitting the quarter pipe helped the judges make the tough call and give the win to Scotty.

With the fast-paced format, and the easy to understand bracket and judging system, the crowd really got into the contest. With only twelve riders and a great crew of organizers at the ASA, the atmosphere was super laid back and everyone seemed to have a great time. After the dust settled in the arena, there was an after party in a local bar that was a great cap to the contest evening. The ASA is planning to do several more of these contests throughout the year, so hopefully we’ll be back for more!

2010 ASA BMX Triples - DeKalb, Illinois - Koji Kraft

Koji Kraft lives just a half-hour away from DeKalb, so as a local he was definitely one of the crowd favorites. Whip over jump number two.

2010 ASA BMX Triples - DeKalb, Illinois - Brett Banasiewicz

Maddog has frontflip no-handers on lock, but kept his hands on during all fronties during the contest. If he would have let them fly, he might have won another round…

Rob Darden has the banger contest tricks, but can crank and boost classic ones, too. Turndown over the first hit.

2010 ASA BMX Triples - DeKalb, Illinois - Austin Coleman

Austin Coleman's vert background helped him attack the quarter and boost no-handed flairs and a double downside whip in the contest. He also did one of my favorite tricks of the contest—a one-handed superman seatgrab over the second jump.

Zack Warden has been staying healthy, has lost a bunch of weight, and is completely on top of his game—360 bikeflips dialed? What? Yeah… Whip on the quarter.

2010 ASA BMX Triples - DeKalb, Illinois - Ryan Nyquist

Ryan Nyquist is no stranger to boosting huge airs on big quarters, and his 540 double barspins helped get him to the final round against Scotty. One-hander, one-footer.

2010 ASA BMX Triples - DeKalb, Illinois - Scotty Cranmer

Scotty Cranmer usually doesn't do a whole lot during practice, but when it's show time he knows how to turn up the juice and get shit done. And at this contest, he got it done… Indian air.

Scotty Cranmer has found some new motivation recently in his riding and is absolutely on fire. He was super stoked to be in the finals with one of his idols, and looked completely shocked and beyond psyched when they announced that he won.
