The dirt course in Portland is always inside because of the unpredictable Northwest weather so Fuzzy Hall and his crew have to and find a way to wrap the jumps back around themselves with a berm. So needless to say, the course out here was super creative and technical. That’s why it is so surprising that there was no dirt practice yesterday before there was qualifying and finals in the same day today. But even with only a few hours of practice, the riders killed it.
The first place qualifier in prelims was Corey Bohan who didn’t do a single barspin or tailwhip in his winning run. It was his smooth, stylish 360 variations and a one-footed x-up backflip that set him apart from the rest of the crowd.
In qualifying, everyone literally had to land their hardest tricks if they wanted to get in the top nine and ride in the finals. It may have actually been one of the toughest qualifiers I’ve ever seen…
Anthony Napolitan did frontflip no-handers, Dennis Enarson did flip whips, Chris Doyle did his signature 360 inverts, Ryan Guettler did really stretched super flips, Diogo Canina and Scotty Cranmer did flip whips… Serious bangers throughout the prelims.
Then in the first run of finals Luke Parslow set the tone and let everyone know he wanted to win this stop of the Dew Tour for the second year in a row. He came out swing hard and landed a flip whip and a double flip in his first run. But as great as that run was, the field of competition was even tougher. Ryan Nyqyist didn’t have to ride prelims since he got third at the Chicago Dew Tour a few months ago and during his first run he did a 360 double barspin, opposite 360 double barspin, another 360 barspin, then a 720 barspin. With that run, he went into the lead and never lost it before landing on the top of the podium at the end of the night.
Dennis Enarson did a triple whip mid set and ended his run with a nothing to tailwhip. Scotty Cranmer did a flip whip, double whip, truck, no-hander, and no-handed frontflip all in the same run to secure his spot on the podium. There was so much BMX going on in the past few hours that it is really hard to remember all the insanity that went down so I’ll give my typing fingers a rest and get started editing the video so you can all see for yourself how wild the dirt comp was today.
