2009 Interbike S&M/Fit/Shadow Conspiracy Rail Jam

As you may already know, the entire bicycle industry has a presence at Interbike; everything from road bikes, mountain bikes, bike racks, pumps, safety gear, energy bars, to some of the most ridiculous pedal powered wheeled inventions you could imagine. The majority of the BMX brands are located in the back corner in the BMX Zone. In comparison to the rest of the tradeshow, the BMX Zone is pretty wild and a lot of people probably never even step foot into it. Chris Moeller was hoping the rail jam would draw an audience into the BMX Zone, where they could witness first hand how we ride our bikes and see the camaraderie between riders.

Unfortunately I couldn’t stick around for the finals. But I did see a lot of great riding during qualifying; I thought Nathan Williams, Kevin Kiraly, Davey Watson, and Dave Thompson all looked promising for a win. In the end, Kevin Kirlay took home the win in the form of a vacation to Hawaii.

I have no idea how many non-riders actually made their way over to watch the jam, but I do know that Mat Hoffman and Keith Treanor were judging, and the sidelines were packed with riders. The jam helped break up the routine of the tradeshow, and honestly, after all that talk about MSRPs, new specs, and price points, I found it refreshing to take a break from the business and just watch some of the best street riders in the world annihilate a rail for an hour. Hopefully we’ll see more events like this at future Interbike shows.
