Miles Rogoish caught up with Felt’s Josh Betley to check out his bike…. And watch him install a custom paint and heat-treat job.

And before the comments pour in…no, the negative weight thing is not true. Yes, Josh lied on camera. Sorry your dreams are crushed.

Anyway Tony, i know that helium is way lighter than air and it floats because of that. Negative weight means going up…helium does so…but only when its free on the atmosphere or in something really light like baloons. In tubes the weight of the bike keep it landed…but its true that the overal wheel weight will be less than with normal air.

  • Ben Says:

Genius, thanks for clearing that up for me.

  • digitalnico Says:

    helium??! thats fuckin sick!

  • digitalnico Says:

so a tire with a higher psi rating would hold a little more helium making the bike lighter also?

  • forcejump Says:

    animal collective…nice

  • jose munoz Says:

im sorry but that bike looks like shit and it does not sound good lol

  • george Says:

i heard ruben alcantra does put helium in his tires….where can i find that shit to put in my tires?

  • Bret.M Says:

wheres that hip at in tulsa cause im only 45 min away fom t-town

  • Bob Says:

If u dont know youll never know muahahahahaha ^^^^

  • Alex Says:

Helium floats because it is less dense than air, and to put it in tires, there needs to be more of it to get the same pressure than there would be if there was air in it, and it cant save 10lbs, are you f***ing high?!

  • jonny harnisch Says:

you know he probably was high… you know when you smoke weed it makes your body lighter than air, and anything its touching… so the weed combined with the helium makes JB’s overall bike and body weight under 25 lbs!

  • michael jackson Says:

so when your having a shred fest and decide to smoke a doobie you can use that extra psi you dont want and breath that shit and talk like aliens.

  • The Muffin Man Says:

correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t helium just eat away at your tubes?

  • T.j. Bennett Says:

    not necessarily

  • T.j. Bennett Says:

    oi…..here we go

    huhuhm..
to start off, the first thing you need to know is what you might already know but just didn’t acknowledge the analogy of the matter.
Helium is a smaller atom than air, which makes it float and that’s why helium balloons make their way to the milky way. Unfortunately their life span is that of a june bug.
In Bmx “matter (tube)” is the downfall along with a few other things needed to be incorporated. Kenetic Energy from the moving tire. It’s bmx that’s what it’s there for there’s no use in trying to stop it. Because it moves there is no “absolute zero” of motion there fore the transational motion of the atoms in the tire vibrate in place creating…Kenetic Energy……….(KE=1/2mv squared) This Kenetic Energy causes not only heat, increasing the expansion of the rubber but also helps to force the atoms of He(Helium) out of the crystal matrix of the tire_tube matter.
Second is the color and absorbtion_reflections of coefficients and ambient temperature. Black absorbs heat more than any other color. Unfortunately when rubber (tires and tubes) are heated they expand. Now this could possibly be fixed in a bmx situation possibly but probably only a little more temporary than permanent(i don’t know i haven’t tried..i don’t have the resources)Let give for expample…shrink tube. When heated, the tube shrinks. This is one of few matters that do this and the reasoning behind this is that they have large quantities of water in the chemical compounds. Therefore that would be only temporary so maybe a more dense tube which would lead to more weight which would lead to a huge contradictory catastrophe.
Some of the things misunderstood ..
More Helium would result in faster leakage-
Not necessarily. Look at it this way. If that was correct you would be basically saying that the helium was damaging the tube creating larger scars for the helium to leak out of. The rubber expands there for shrinks under less pressure only a “pop” would result in permanent faster leakage.
Also to have a tire with a higher psi rating, the tube needs to be more dense resulting in more weight. So it would be lighter than a tire with air in it but you would probably save more weight having a lighter tire with just air in it.

  • Nikolai Says:

okay, so fuck the helium stuff, but would heat treating your forks like that actually work?

  • T.j. Bennett Says:

    Nikolai….No

  • T.j. Bennett Says:

but when the rust burns under the aerosal spray it developes quite a strong smell of jack daniels if you get close enough.

  • OtaBMX Says:

People should stop showing riders smoking on camera.
It’s such bullshit man, how come a so-called “athlete” smokes?
“Oh, we’re not athletes, it’s a lifestyle blahblah”, whatever, f*ck it, go ahead and kill yourself, fine by me, you can smoke it, shoot it or even insert it in you ass, just don’t put that on a BMX video!
I’m not some father worried about his kids or something like that, it’s just plain stupid to have that on a bike video.

  • ibmx29426 Says:

fact: michael died 51 mins after this post. I also dont think that helium would make that big of a difference. You guys that really all weight conscious i have a way to take ten pounds off your bike. Here it goes, go on a diet. i mean its science just like this helium is but you can actually take off more weight going on a diet then putting helium in your tires.

  • adam Says:

wow some people need to take a chillaxative, that guys bike was so ratty it was awesome. sure the guy smokes who cares but i kinda see where otaBMX is coming from, it aint cool man. the hip was bangin i want somthing like that here in New Zealand

  • T.j. Bennett Says:

yep…besides heavier bikes are more stable. Unless you’re a freikin ninja muscle’s only going to give you less ffffffffflowwww

  • Alex Says:

    Stfu

  • Live-in-the-Woods Says:

helium isnt going to make a noteable difference in a bike tire because there’s not enough rotating weight. they’ve been doing it in car tires for a while now…

  • nico Says:

    songg ??

  • OtaBMX Says:

sorry about that. i just took a fat shit while smokin a doobie. well gonna go beat off to the sound of sister banging her boyfriend and wished i could ride a bike let alone a girl besides my hand..

  • PropsBMX Says:

i have to find out if that freaking helium is true, i really dont know haow make my BMX more lighter..

    anyway thanks,

watching vid like this is also fun.

    haha

try to see Scrap Bikes of Philippines.

  • Brock Says:

lol. hey adam. what that guys talking about is right thow. bmx kids are reading and watching this stuff and getting the image that being pro means being stoned all the time. its not good. like in an issue of 20/20 theres an intire page dedicated to some tosser who is constantly stoned and even has his bike painted the colour of weed. i got nothing against the stuff. but projecting it on young kids in this way isnt a good thing for bmx.

    =D that sounded intellectual.

  • Lewis Says:

Your a bunch of Dumb fucks from what ive read. He’s being funny, enjoy it.

  • Cameron monahan FUZE 3 Says:

is it easier to bunnyhop with helium tubes

  • temas Says:

do u guys think that heat treating ur bike like he did wuld actually help protect the paint from scratches and stuff? cuz i paint my bike regularly and want to try it

  • Rich Tiesto Says:

    Lol wow ^

  • rc1 Says:

wow really people does everything have to be so literal? he was making a joke that doesn't mean he is serious. If you will believe that shit then i guess i'm jesus and i'll start receiving prayers in 10 min.

  • joe Says:

    and you sound like shit

  • joe Says:

we have one life live how you want
