L.A. Marathon Ride Recap & Photos

Yesterday about 20 BMX riders including a handful of old school legends got together and rode 21 miles through Downtown Los Angeles in the L.A. Marathon to help raise money for the Athlete Recovery Fund.

Among the riders were Mike Dominguez, Xavier Mendez, Eddie Fiola, Brian Blyther, John Povah, Woody Itson, and Dave Voelker. The 21-mile ride started out at 5am and took us about two hours to complete. With thousands of cyclists line up at the starting line it probably added about a half mile to the ride because we had to start so far back! The first 17 or so miles were all fun and games filled with curb jumps, manuals, high-speed sprints and turns, and jokes with the crew. But the last few miles were more or less spent slowly cruising and dreaming of the donuts that were waiting for us after the finish line.

After the ride, we all went to Alvin Mullins’ house that has a backyard mini ramp where we BBQ’d, marinated in the hot tub, and yes, rode some more! And all this was before noon!

Everyone had a great time riding and hanging out together, and it felt good knowing that our efforts were helping out injured riders like Stephen Murray.

4:14am roll call!

A sea of thousands of cyclists getting ready to roll through the streets of L.A.

The ARF/BMX crew at the starting line.

Eddie Fiola hooked up his bike with GPS and a stereo. He didn’t get lost and had a constant stream of audio entertainment throughout the 21-mile ride.

Aaron Cooke rode the bike Stephen Murray crashed on.

A few of us new-schoolers at the finish line.

From ages 8 to 45, we had a diverse group of riders with us that made for an awesome time!

Here’s a quick video Aaron Cooke made from the day…

Very cool Fat! Good cause. I noticed in the first photo that the old schoolers all had seats high enough to actually sit on.

What a good time. It was an early start but when it only happens once a year it not that bad.
