What’s up with the black tape between your grips and bar ends?
I carry my bike on the roof of my car and I did that to fight off a little throttle grip when I hit rain. Now it’s just an ugly mess of tape [laughs].
Is it true that you like your bike the same as your spots…beat up and crappy looking? Why is that?
[Laughs] I don’t really like my bike beat up, I just believe that it’s a waste to not ride a part as long as it will hold up. Being a sponsored rider and being able to get free parts doesn’t mean we should change frames because we’re tired of the color or it’s scratched up. It’s like gluttony [laughs].
You’ve been riding for Hoffman Bikes for over a decade, how much has your bike setup changed during that time? What are a few keys points?
Yes, it’s been 13 years now. As we all know bikes have transformed big-time over the past ten years for sure! I remember when my frame weighed in just under 8 lbs. and I was breaking them. My frame now weighs barely over 4 lbs. and I have yet to break one.
Have you ever thought about riding four pegs?
Everyday! I put a forth peg on about once a week to try it. I ride really far up on my feet so every time I would manual or even hop it would hit the back of my foot—drives me crazy! I’ll run one soon, though—I think.
How has working on the Bama line and Noctis cranks changed or affected how you look at a bike—from design, function, and strength viewpoint?
I’ve always loved working on cars and motorcycles where there’s a whole lot more thought that has to go into everything you do. I like to think of ways to make things stronger, to look at a problem and figure out the cause of it, and what changes need to be done to fix it.
I’m sure other freecoaster riders would like to know how you run yours? Are far as slack is concerned…
I like a lot of slack. I used to be bad about cranking out of manuals and stuff like that, now that’s not even an option and I’m glad.
What else are you looking forward to project or trip wise?
I’m stoked to be filming for two videos this year, Dan’s Comp and Shadow. Also very motivated on the whole Ipath deal, they’ve got a really good thing going on and I’m so stoked to be a part of it.
Any thanks…
All my sponsors and friends.
