First time you rode a bike…
3 years old according to my Mom.
First sponsor…
Useless Clothing. Thanks Ramsdell!
First time you traveled out of the country…
1999, I was 18 and I went to Japan for a dirt jumping contest.
First time you met a real pro…
Scotty Clevenger and Cory Muth came to our spot when I was about 14 years old. Scotty was in the first ever “Xtreme Games” and Cory wasn’t officially “pro,” but was a very popular racer in the 18X class and had sponsors and pictures in magazines.
First time you realized you could ride a BMX bike for a living…
Tough one…Probably around the age of 18 when I had to weigh the pros and cons between college and life as a pro bike rider.
First time you rode in the X Games…
1998. I was 17 years old and got 9th place in dirt.
First song you had in a video part…
The name of the song escapes me, but it was a split part with Steve Crandall in the Useless video. Crandall actually called me about it a few months ago and said that I should thank him for my success in BMX. Thanks Crandall! My first solo part was in “Damn Kids” to Millencolin’s “Lights Out.”
First set of trails you rode…
First official set of trails I rode was the 401 trails in Raleigh, NC…At the time they were called “Blake’s trails.”
First magazine cover…
Cover of Ride, September 2001.
First time on TV…
From my first-ever dirt contest. 1997 Christmas Classic.
First bad trend you followed…
Big jeans, tiny shirts.
First major purchase…
2003 Audi Avant Wagon. I was stoked at the time, but the car turned out to be a major disappointment.
First car you drove…
I used to help my Mom clean doctors’ offices when I was a little kid. At the end of the night she’d let me drive our Plymouth Horizon to the dumpsters to get rid of the trash.
First time on an airplane…
4 years old.
First contest you competed in…
Useless contest in Greenville, NC. It was probably 1994 or ’95. I can’t recall what place I got but, Dave Mirra and Colin Winkelmann put on a pro demo after the contest and it was wild.
