July 3rd Update: Out of respect for Matt and his family we won’t be posting much specifics of his injury, but we’ve learned that he has fractured (or broken) his skull in the back of his head. He’s been awake and alert in ICU and is resting and being observed.
July 3 (from Matt’s sister on facebook): “Update on Matt: spoke to him this morning, and he’s feeling pretty lousy, but he’s doing ok. His injury is serious, but so far looks like hopefully no major lasting problems.”
July 4 (from the S&M site): “So if you haven’t heard by now, the homie Matt took a pretty bad crash yesterday, that ended him in ICU with a fractured skull. Got an email today from A.J. ‘Matt’s doing much better. He is only going to be in there a few more days.’”
July 7 (from Matt’s sister on facebook): [Matt's] still in the hospital in PA. His condition is stable, he’s started some physical therapy and gotten up and out of bed some. He’s still in a lot of pain. Our mom is there with him, but they say he can’t fly home for two weeks because of the pressure. They may drive home when he’s released from the hospital.
July 8 (from Matt’s sister on facebook): “I don’t think Matt has been on Facebook yet, but I know he appreciates everyone’s well-wishes and support. It sounds like he’ll be released from the hospital tomorrow and because he’s not cleared to fly for a couple weeks, our mom is renting a car to drive them home. He’s got a lot of recovering to do, but at least he can go home! Wear your helmets, friends!! And donate to the Athlete Recovery Fund, they are amazing.”

It’s great to see Matt smiling and in good spirits. You can’t keep the Cobra down! Photo: sandmbikes.com
