The Friday Interview – Alex Magallan

My first exposure to Alex Magallan was when I saw his section in the Nashville, Tennessee area video Nobody Special. After that I hadn’t seen or heard much about him until Sunday’s Up Up and Away video dropped when Alex unleashed a section many people considered to be their favorite in the video. Since then he’s kept the ball rolling with two banger web edits, and leaving a solid impression with whoever is lucky enough to kick it with him. The BMX world is finally getting a taste of Alex’s skills since he’s been traveling quite a bit with the Sunday team. Here’s a little recap of what he’s been up to recently. —Z

You’ve been a bad-ass rider for years, but it seems like you were always hiding in Nashville for some reason. Why did it take you so long to start traveling?
Well, I’ve always jumped at any chance to skip town. I believe travels have been working out here more as of lately. I’m definitely considerate about any traveling opportunities.

Great job on your ATX edit on the Sunday site. I think that was the best web video I’ve watched in a while, how long did you film for that?
Thanks man, [I] appreciate that. Um…we filmed about two weeks for that edit. Be on the lookout for the Lee Dennis edit, sh-t is savage!

You had a few clips at the same building that the guy flew his plane into, how crazy is that?
Actually, come to find out it was a couple buildings down from that spot. It’s still kind of odd either way. He for sure beat the system on that move.

Really? It looked like those white cobblestone banks in the before and after photos the Sandy Carson shot, are you sure it’s a different building?
I’m pretty sure it was really close, but not the same building. I could be completely wrong, though. I’ve never been back to the spot since then. I need to peep it.

What did you think of the Austin in general, did if live up to all the hype?
Good times and a lot of pedaling in Austin.

A lot of pedaling…like you actually rode everywhere? Is that different from home in Nashville?
Usually we pedaled to get around-unless we caught a ride in [Mike] Mastroni or [Alex] Platt’s whip. Yeah, it’s different, back home I actually have a vehicle, so it’s easier to commute. I don’t mind the exercise, though.

Did you bring your black Laredo boots with to you Texas?
I wish! There are hot spots around Austin, where they would fit right in.

You left Austin just before the snow hit to go Australia…Tell me about Australia.
Yeah, just in the nick of time. Oz is something else. Food is way over priced and you receive small amounts of water. On a good note, the sites are amazing and the exotic foreign looking women aren’t too bad to look at also.

How was the riding scene, spots, etc.?
We rode a lot of parks. It seemed like every town had its own concrete park. It rained half the trip so we were kind of limited, too. We rode Melbourne street for a brief time…that was a treat. All the bike shops we visited were legit, from the people who ran them to the amount of BMX product they carried. It’s just awesome to see that it’s possible. Backbone, Sanction, Helenvale, Extreme Cycles, Strictly BMX, Pushbike Factory, For the Riders bike shop, and the guys at BMX International Distro for Sunday Bikes in Oz. I would like to thank the shops and the riders for being so welcoming. Cheers!

Where did you guys visit?
From Melbourne all the way up the coast to Brisbane. The temperature increased the further north we went, due to us being below the equator. Which is not the case in the States.

Any chance of an Alex Magallan Australia edit in the works?
There will be trip edit with Gary Young, Aaron Ross, kangaroos, Tom Arkus, Jim C., myself, and Jake Seeley. Tom is creating this work of art as we speak.

So how do those trips compare to driving from Vegas to Salt Lake City in a van full of sick people?
Honestly never been on a trip quite like that. Everyone’s health sh-t the bed.

During your travels I’m sure you’ve met a ton of new riders. Who has left a lasting impression on you, who is coming up?
I would have to say Garrett Reeves. This dude has been destroying for a while now. Keep an eye out for this Weezer fanatic to take over the game.

The band Weezer?
He gets down with that.

So while you’re off on all of these trips, what’s going on back home in Nashville?
Hmmm… lets see here…up and down with the weather. Way too many cover bands on Broadway, and some salty bastards living off Lindsley Ave.

I heard a rumor that Corey Martinez is moving there. Did you hear that one?
This is true; he’s been talking about it for a while now. Glad to hear he finally made the move!
